Senior Dental Care: The Nutrition Tips You Need to Keep a Strong Smile

Posted .

As a senior, you have the option to care for your smile and maintain your natural teeth or you have the option to lose track of oral hygiene and ruin your smile. However, our Family Dentistry team recommends that you take care of your oral health and keep your natural teeth for a lifetime. Doing so isn’t as tough as it sounds. All you need to do is keep up on oral hygiene, visit your dentist, and have a balanced and healthy diet. To help you know how to keep a balanced and healthy diet, we recommend doing the following things:

· Eat the right foods: The best foods to eat as a senior are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and lean proteins, like chicken, turkey, and fish.
· Consume the right drinks: Do your best to limit your intake of sugary drinks. These products can lead to tooth decay and obesity. We also recommend limiting your alcohol intake. Alcohol tends to irritate the sensitive lining of your mouth and increase your risk of developing oral cancer.
· Get enough calcium: Calcium is very important, and we recommend that you consume about 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day, which is about 3 cups. It’s best to get the right amount of calcium by drinking low-fat dairy milk and by eating cheese, yogurt, broccoli, spinach, Swiss chard, and kale.
