Dry Mouth is a Real Disease

Posted .

If you are experiencing dryness or stickiness in your mouth, bad breath, thick and stringy saliva, difficulty chewing, difficulty swallowing, difficulty speaking, a change in your sense of taste, or a sore throat, then you might have dry mouth. This problem can be treated and should be dealt with quickly and efficiently before worse infections can arise.

What exactly is dry mouth? You have six salivary glands that keep your mouth moisturized and prevent cracking on the lips and in the gums. Dry mouth happens when these glands stop functioning correctly, which can be caused by the side effects of various medications, aging, tobacco, alcohol, methamphetamine, or other random disorders.

Treatment is definitely possible. Our dentist, Dr. Samuel Schmitz, may recommend changing medicines used for other problems, using special mouthwashes and other products to treat dry mouth, and, for more severe cases, taking prescription medicine for it.

If you suspect that you have dry mouth, make sure to come into Family Dentistry promptly. If it is not treated, it can cause yeast infections, split skin, increased plaque, tooth decay, gum disease, severe mouth sores. These can be painful, so don’t wait.
